Curriculum

This is a list of our current curriculum by grade.  I have been homeschooling for 14 years.  My oldest has graduated.  I have 2 in highschool, 1 in jr. high, 3 in grade school, and 1 toddler!  I have tried a lot of different curriculum over the years and this is what is working for us right now. I also have a list of our home library books.  We use lots of living books for history.

The Art of Poetry - We are currently using this one, however, I don't like the activities in this book. And it seems this curriculum was made for a group of people.  I am adding some free lessons from the internet to replace some of the activities. I may also add Intro to Poetry from Progeny Press also.

Exploring Creation with Biology - Dive Science - I really like this program because it can be a regular course or an honors course.  It also uses Apologia test or internet links for the reading.  He performs all the labs so if you can't do them at home, your student still gets to watch.

North Star Geography

French I - Rosetta Stone (or Spanish )

Institute for Excellence in Writing - - We have tried many different writing classes and this is by far the best.  It is also the most expensive.  But if you just by one level and learn the process, you can adapt it to any writing you want your kids to do.  I think the ability to write is very important so we continue to use this curriculum in high school.

Truth Quest History - Age of Revolution 1 - We have a huge home library so this program works great for us.  You can see our book list here.  We read living books instead of using a dry textbook.  I have them read at least a book a week depending on the size. They also read the story line in this book.  She provides some background to each time period they are reading about.

Math 8/7 - Saxon

Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics - They have MP3s out now for these books.  I haven't got one yet, but I am planning on it so that my kids can read along while someone (besides me) reads the book to them.  It will free me up and they will still hear the book.

America the Beautiful - Notgrass

Easy Grammar - I really like how this program teaches prepositions first.  It is a nice change from the same old stuff from grades 3-5. And for those who are still struggling to get it - this really helps.

Read and Think 6 - Abeka - We use these short timed reading to check comprehension.  These resemble the ones on an SAT test so I think it's good to practice this kind of timed reading.

Reading - Historical Fiction

Piano - Childrens Music Journey - This program runs on a computer and hooks up to a keyboard.  We are only on level 2, but my kids are enjoying it.  It's a little spendy, however, I will be putting 3 or 4 kids on this.  It's cheaper than sending them for lessons (which seems silly anyway since I play the piano!).  But they don't like lessons from me. I am hoping this will give them the basics and then I will take over the teaching.
