Pink Valentine Quilt

Now that Christmas is over, who's ready for Valentine's Day? Not me, that's for sure!  But I did make this fun pink quilt from all scraps. All shades of reddish pink including a few that are almost red. I used 2.5" strips and squares for this one. I tried to cut an equal amount of light, dark, and medium fabrics.

56" x 64"

The top was so pink I knew that I couldn't put a pink back on it. That would make it too "little girl". So to make it more mature feeling, I went with a white and gray print that reads as light gray.

But I added a pink paisley strip to add some fun. And I didn't have enough gray to do the whole back anyway....but we're going to go with the fun reason anyway.

Whether you like pink or you wanna decorate the living room for Valentine's Day, this quilt will fit the bill. And a bunch of scraps are out of my bins!

Quilty Hearts Baby Quilt

For Thanksgiving, the kids got to do some tie-dyeing. Usually they just get to do a shirt, but Becca wanted to try to dye some fabric to make a pillow case. She wanted purple, but we didn't have any purple dye so we made our own with the navy, pink, and turquoise dyes. You never know how it is going to turn out until it's all rinsed and dry. Well, she didn't like it at all. We had planned on adding a piece for the end of the case .I tried every solid purple I had in my stash and I couldn't make it work.

So with only 28" of fabric, I did some quilty math and was able to make this cute little baby quilt. I carefully cut the strips I needed, saving the large swirl for last...

So that I could put it on the back! This hand dyed fabric went from drab to fab in this cute baby quilt!

So glad there was a happy ending to the Thanksgiving day fabric dying fun! Next time I plan on using a full yard so that I won't have to add any fabric to it to make a pillow case.

I Spy Quilt

Simple little I-Spy quilt Josie and I finished up for the shop. Josie did the layout and sewed the top. I quilted it for her. She is getting to be quite the sewist! She doesn't like to sit and sew too long, but it adds up. We picked a yellow fabric for the back and solid black binding to match both sides.

Since she has conquered sewing rows and columns, she is now working on sewing easy blocks together for a scrap quilt. We'll make a few quilts with simple blocks to make sure her seams are still lining up and then hopefully we'll move on to half square triangles.

Kookie Kisses Pattern Release

This fun quilt was inspired by my youngest child. She has been wanting a quilt for her bed and I had her pick out her favorite colors from the Kona cotton swatch board I have. She loves the turquoise and the bright pink the best. After we widdled down her pile, this is what we came up with - medium and dark shades of pink, green, turquoise, and purple. It is such a fun color combination! An so here is Kookie Kisses, a pattern named for all the hugs and kisses my daughter loves to share with everyone!

This is a throw size made using 2.5" strips. The pattern also has directions for using fat quarters so you can pretty much use any fabric that you want.  It comes in three sizes - throw, twin, and queen. I bet you're wondering why I didn't make a twin for Emma....well, let me just say she pulled a fast one on me as I was playing around with some color designs. She has picked a two color quilt in this pattern which will be coming soon. Such a sinker!

You know that back has to be blue because it's my favorite color. But it needed a little jazzing up so I tried out several of the fabrics and the purple just spoke to me. It's the perfect addition to the quilt!

Speaking of purple, here is what Kookie Kisses looks like in all purple fabrics. This would be a fun one for a purple lover. It would also be cute in all pinks!

As I was playing, I also tried a black background. Oohhh, I love this one too! I hope you see one you like as well. Maybe you have a color combination that you love to use...what would it be?

If you'd like to make Kookie Kisses for your special someone you can find the pattern in my shop. I have the PDF  and Printed versions available.

Postcard with Gray

I've finished another postcard quilt, this time with gray and all original colors. I thought it would be fun to compare it too the previous one I made with the extra colors. It's the one with the black binding.

There's not a lot of difference between the two. Mostly I see a few darker pieces on the black one in the bottom left corner. I also see a few different fabrics in the upper left where I changed out some of the orange to make it more diverse and more towards the lighter orange. I wasn't sure I would like the black binding, but I really think it's striking in this photo.

I'm working on a new pattern...finally! It will be sewn just as soon as my sewing machine comes back from the repair shop. I hope it's not gone too long!

Camouflage Quilt

I've been meaning to make a camouflage quilt for a couple years now. I've finally done it! The backing fabric has been hiding in my closet for a while, but I stumbled across it looking for something last month. I have two bolts - one with this reddish color and the other is more tan.

I wanted relatively small pieces to give this quilt the camouflage feel and I think it worked out. The only thing I would change is to add some of the backing fabric to the front. I will be doing that on the next quilt.

56" x 68"

This would make a great gift for any outdoorsman. Good thing my kids have plenty of quilts or some of them might have tried to snatch this one up!

Another Postcard Quilt

Recently, I was asked to make a postcard quilt and as I was getting fabric out to cut I thought why not make 2 while I have everything out. This is the one quilt where all my boys help me layout and iron as I sew. It is so helpful! Anyway, that first quilt is sewn into blocks and ready to sew into a top, but there is no hurry since the customer doesn't want it until November. Because this one isn't a special request, I was able to use up some different colors of solids I had left over from other quilts. I think I added at least 10 more colors to the 37 that are already in my quilt usually.

I was running low on gray prints, but I found this one in my backing bin. It didn't match any of the gray solids I had on hand so I ended up using Kona Pepper. It looks very striking, but not overpowering like black does. One down and one to go!

Scraps with Black and White

60" x 72"
The fabric pieces for this quilt were cut this summer, but got put on hold because other quilts took priority. But I am glad it's off my cutting table now and ready for someone to snuggle with.

It's a one block quilt and there are 30 blocks in the quilt. I started using 9 black and white and 9 color fabrics in each block, but it just seemed like there was too much black and white and not enough color. So I started switching out one or two of the black and white for a colored one in each block.

It was still challenging to layout the blocks with all that black and white, but I persevered and got it done. I love the break of color the black and white provide. It's a fun scrappy quilt for sure! Lot's of scraps still to go!

King Size Rainbow Bargello

Look at this ginormous rainbow of a quilt! It's a king size bargello modified from a pattern by Let's Quilt Something. Sorry to say she has removed her blog completely so the pattern is no longer available.  Below is a shot of the texture after the quilt was washed. I quilted an over all meander in a gray thread. It's wonderfully crinkly!

After making this big beautiful quilt, it's finally time for a fall quilting break! It will be a short one though. I have a lot of things planned this week, but then I'll get back to quilting.  There's too many quilts to make!

Postcard Pillowcases

This was a fun little project request that I finished up recently. They are 20" pillow covers that were inspired by the Postcard from Sweden quilt. They are similar but not identical.

It's hard to see, but I did an envelop closure and the tops were quilted with the organic wavy lines. I like these smaller projects.  But now I'm off to make a king size quilt. No time for chit chat!

Summer of Scraps Wrap Up

Here's my final scrappy quilt of the summer...and just in time. Tomorrow fall officially starts! This is not my first black and yellow quilt as you can tell from all the different scraps and it certainly won't be my last. This is such a nice color combination for almost any room. I pulled in every black/yellow and gray/yellow scrap I could find. That tiger strip is even a left over piece of flannel I snuck in there. It's thin and you don't really notice it.

All in all, I was able to make 8 scrappy quilts this summer. There is one more quilt top cut into pieces but not sewn at all that didn't make it to it's completion. But that's okay. I'll get to it soon. There is still SO many scraps left to use. I'll be taking a break from scraps while I make a few customer quilts. It is quilt season after all. But I've learned a valuable lesson this summer...don't let your scraps pile up so high that 8 quilts don't make much of dent!!!

Another scrappy quilt...

It's still summer right? I'm still working on scrap quilts and it's still hot here in Oklahoma so I'm going to call it summer! For this scrappy quilt, I've gathered scraps in black, pink, orange, lime green, and turquoise. My inspiration for the fabrics came from one of the black prints that has those colors in it.

This one block quilt is made from 8" squares rotated to make the design. It would look great in any color scheme you can come up with but using a print with multiple colors like I did is the easiest way to get started. I even added in some black with gold prints because I was a bit short on the colorful ones. It doesn't even look like I used scraps unless you start counting how many different prints are in this quilt.

The back and binding are a cross hatch print from connecting threads. You could add more scraps to the back to liven it up if you had enough to do it. I was running short so I chose the easy route.

I have at least one more scrap quilt to finish up for the summer and then I will have to decide if I want to keep going or do something else. I didn't quite get through all the quilts and styles I had on my list. But it  may just be time for something new!

Quilty Hearts in Rainbow

Here is a throw size quilty hearts quilt inspired by Myra's twin sized rainbow version.  A customer wanted a rainbow quilt in this pattern, so I helped her decide which colors we should use. This size only allows for 6 colors of the rainbow so I suggested we combine the orange and yellow and the pink and red.

She loved Myra's quilting so I had her pick out one of my pantographs to quilt this up for her. This one is called Square Spiral - one of my favorites to quilt.

This is the "after washing" picture which show just how much texture you get from this pattern. I always wash quilts before they leave the house for two reasons. The first and most important - I would hate for a quilt to bleed so I wash with at least 4 color catchers. The second reason is that sometimes people don't realize that the quilt will get all crinkly and shrink once it's washed. This way I can list it at the correct size and the look of it won't change when they wash it.

Another Scrap Snap Quilt

Here's another Scrap Snap Quilt I made as a custom request. This quilt goes through a lot of scraps! I like to use at least 14 different prints in each color so I ended up having to cut some green, orange, and pink. With all the scrappy quilts I have been making, my choices are getting slim.

I know this is a terrible picture, but it's been raining like crazy and I just wanted a quick photo of the back to remember that I added this beautiful rainbow strip. (I would have been smart to take it the when I got the photo of the front...)  If I every make another one, I want to add this again. I only did it this time because there wasn't enough fabric to cover the whole back, but I really love the color it adds!

Summer of Scraps - Rainbow!

We are in the full swing of summer here in Oklahoma so what better way to beat the heat than to sew a scrappy rainbow quilt! This one is called Charming Plus and was a quilt along from Quilty Therapy in 2016. I loved it then and I still love it now! I made mine from 2.5" squares and a some 5" squares for the background. I sneaked in some not so bright squares this time and I think it still looks good.

54" x 66"

There are so many ways you can you use scraps in a rainbow quilt so I just chose 5 of my favorite rainbow scrappy quilts that I have made over the years. Here is the first Charming Plus quilt I made.

Scrap Snap Quilt made from 2.5" squares and strips, 5" squares, and 4.5" squares.

Rainbow HSTs made from 5" squares

Disappearing Rainbow made from 5" squares.

A Splash of Color made from 2.5" squares.
This one could have also gone in with the scrappy background post.

Use those scraps, folks!
