Quilt Ministry Update

We had a great time last friday and were very productive!  We finished sewing 4 quilt tops. 

One quilt was given out to a lady who is having surgery this week.

The 4th quilt we finsihed was a flannel rag quilt that Karla Sue took home to cut, cut, cut!!!  We'll get a picture when she's done with it!  And I'll post better pictures when we get the quilts finsihed.

 Ms. Pete made this out of flannel and she gave me a back too.  Going to be quilted tomorrow hopefully!

I made this one last week.  It has pictures of sailboats, light houses, and docks on it.

Baby Girl Quilt

Isn't that cute?!  This is the quilt we made at Quilt Ministry last friday.  Wanted everybody to get a chance to see it before Pastor Duane gives it away on Saturday!

Quilt Ministry Update

We had a great time Friday sewing quilts!  And we have now delivered our first 2 quilts to a couple guys who both have cancer.  Pastor Jeff brought back a great report from the first one, that he was truly blessed to receive our quilt.  So exciting!  Here is the first one, the second one I forgot to take a picture, but it looks very similar to this one.  We didn't have enough of the main fabric to put on the back so we made 2 quilts instead.

 Then we pieced the back with large 10 in squares.  I think it turned out great and we stretched our fabric!

 Here's the label that we are using for all the quilts except the baby dedication ones.  The verse is Psalm 34:19  Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Speaking of baby dedications, we have 2 baby quilts going out this weekend.  One will be the first one we made for the little boy (see the previous post) and the second will be the little girl quilt we worked on Friday.  Don't have a picture yet, still working on the binding.  Will have that tomorrow for you!

A Fun Night of Quilting!

We had our first Quilt Ministry meeting Friday night.  Our first quilt top was completed and they did a great job! Here's some pictures from our meeting and then of the quilt we worked on.  Each person sewed a 9 patch and then we cut them to make a disappearing 9 patch pattern.

Quilting Practice

I have been wanting to improve my free motion skills ever since I got my quilting machine.  It would be really nice to be able to quilt something besides pantographs, meandering, and straight lines!  I spent most of an afternoon watching videos from The Free Motions Quilting Project.  I chose 6 patterns I liked and followed the directions.  First you practice on paper, then on your machine.  BTW - you can do this on a sewing machine too.  That is how she does it in the videos.  I just used some cheap fabric and left over batting to practice.

The directions for all these squares can be found here.  I tried the Bright Star too, but it was hard to hit the center.  Marking the quilt would make that easier.

Since I was just practicing, I thought I'd try a feather or two. A class on setting up and using our Gammill was included with our purchase.  In this class the teacher showed us how to make a feather. She made it look so easy.  I thought it was intimidating so I was afraid to try one!  Goes to show that we shouldn't be afraid to try new things!  I am no artist and I can't draw at all, but the feather is like drawing hearts.  

  

I did one with an echo and one without.  Swirls were new for me too.  They need some practice!  My hand is a bit shaky still.

I am comfortable with mid size meandering, but tried the smaller version.  Not as bad as I thought it would be!  I would encourage everyone to give free motion quilting a try.  It was fun to see what I could do!  Now it's your turn.  I'd love to see which pattern you choose.  Leave me a comment if you try it!
