A little I Spy Quilt

I've recently finished this I Spy Quilt. It has 80 unique squares and will be fun for someone to play find and seek with it. In the past I've made them without any sashing, but this one has 1" sashing and I think it looks very nice. 

The backing is a black print which just blends in nicely and doesn't distract from all the fun prints. I love the cherry print on the white background in this next picture and the scissor print in the second one. It was several years ago that I cut up all my I Spy fabrics and made them into kits. After I finished quilting this one, I got 3 more sets out and laid out all the squares so they are ready to sew whenever I need one. No thinking will be involved!

 It felt very good to get to work in my sewing room. We've been busy working in the yard and pouring cement amongst many other things. I've got a couple more quilts almost finished and ready to share with you.

Jean Quilt #3

I am making one of these jean quilts for each of my children, 8 in all. This is my third one. I'm pretty sure the used jean supply is not at risk of running out since we are still accumulating them. My boys like to get holes in their pants faster then they can out grow them! My friend gave me a pair of aqua jeans so that was the focus of this quilt. I plan on this one going to my youngest daughter. I always think of aqua for her because of her pretty red hair.

I used an aqua minky dot on the back instead of a minky lush fleece. It seems to be a tad thinner than the lush even though it is just as soft. I didn't use batting for this one and it feels just a little bit too thin compared to the last two jean quilts I made. It's just as heavy and soft as the others. 

The quilting doesn't disappear as much on the minky dot either. :(  But it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.  I quilted with black thread and I love the look on the top. The quilting is just a little more sloppy than I remember on the first two. I really wanted to get this one done. AGH...

 Anyway, done is good. Only 5 more to go! The next one is already cut out and the focus color is gray. But I don't think I'm quite ready to sew it. Good thing the kids don't expect them to be finished any time soon!

Blue and Green Scrap Quilt

I've gone and done it....yep, I finally made myself a quilt! And boy is she a beauty! I dug through every scrap bin and left over block bin that I could find in my sewing room and pulled out these blue, green, and gray fabrics. The top picture is actually upside down. I started with the olive green block in the bottom right with the square in a square block inside it. Then I made a medium blue block and a navy block and a gray blue block.  I then decided to spread out the square in a square blocks around the quilt so I put those up on the design wall and designed around them.

I added the gray pieced because I felt like the quilt needed a spot to rest your eyes. And I wanted to use the gray and white square in a square. I then realized that the blocks around it couldn't' be just one color. It looked to blocky with those straight lines. So I let the colors flow into the next block. I placed the white with green fabrics and the lighter blue fabrics next to the gray to blend the sections. Piecing got real slow at that point, because I was designing every thing on the design wall one piece of fabric at a time.

The colors are truest in the ones on the cement in full sun, but I wanted a full face shot too. For some reason the lighting was just not working and I couldn't even edit it to get the colors that I wanted. But here she is so you can see the actual layout of it. The pictures don't do it justice - it's gorgeous with all those blues and greens!

Snap Line Tester Quilt

Snap Line is a pattern I released recently (the first quilt was rainbow with black). This one was the first one I started on made with aqua and brown scraps. Let's call it a trial and error quilt. I tried it, made a math error and then had to compensate for that with my background sizes. So you might notice that the center strips in the block is larger than in the pattern. Overall it looks pretty much like the pattern and I love the aqua and brown fabric combo.

I found a cool toned brown fabric in my stash to use for the binding and the back. The cool tone made the quilt feel more modern than the warmer brown fabric I also auditioned for the back. I wanted to use an aqua fabric for the binding, but I couldn't find one in my stash that I liked. But I really like the cool brown on the front now that it is finished.

 Mistakes happen folks! But I've found in quilting that most of them can be saved. Who would know that this was not what I intended if I don't tell them? Not a soul!  Get your copy of Snap Line here.

Snap Line Quilt

Oh the weather we've had this past week! It's starting to warm up and so I finally got outside to take some pictures of this quilt. This is my new pattern called Snap Line. I've been very scrap focused this year and was wanting to make something with them. I stumbled across this design by accident! I had made a mistake in my measurements on my first go through and so the block had to be modified. But I love this one so much better!

The wind was blowing outside yesterday, but we did finally get about freezing. The power and water has been out all over the place, but we were very bless to not lose ours. We are not prepared for this kind of below zero weather here where I live. 

Anyway, back to the pattern. This one uses what I call strings. I don't know if that is the proper term or not. If the scrap is smaller than 2.5" I put it in my "string" bin. Well, I had 2 large ones filled to the top. I had the kids iron them all for me last month - what a time saver! I pulled out anything bright and happy over 1.5" wide. This pattern uses strip piecing so each string needs to be at least 10" long. 

Because all the stores have been closed and I don't really want to buy anything anyway, I used a solid black on the back. But it was a bit too boring so I added a row of scraps, 4" long, to the back. Doesn't that look wonderful? And it used up some more scraps!

I looked over and saw the fence while we were out in the yard and thought why no grab a photo over there? I think it's my favorite of all the ones I took. 

Here are a few mockups that I came up with. I love the red binding on the first one. (I'm not usually a red ran.) And then there is the two colored one on the bottom. I have a version of this one almost finished. It's the one I messed up on so it's not exactly the same.
